Gagan Kumar Thapa elected Nepali Congress president

 

Kathmandu. Gagan Kumar Thapa has been elected the president of the Nepali Congress. Thapa has been elected the president of the Nepali Congress by securing 6,584 votes.

Another candidate for the post of president, Shyam Krishna Khadgi, got 375 votes. A total of 7,013 votes were cast in the election, out of which 54 votes were invalid.

Based on the total votes cast, Thapa got 93.88 percent of the votes. Khadgi got 5.35 percent of the votes while 0.77 percent of the votes were invalid. Thapa got 6,209 more votes than Khadgi.

Earlier, Thapa, who was elected general secretary in the 14th general convention of the party, was active in the campaign of leadership change and organizational reform within the party. A special general convention held at the initiative of leaders including the then General Secretary Thapa had elected him as the president.

After the change of leadership through the special convention, there was a debate within the Congress about the legitimacy of the party, organizational structure and leadership. Thapa was elected as the president in the 15th general convention held after that.
