One billion to be spent on upgrading flood-damaged Besisahar-Chame road

Lamjung. One billion rupees will be required for the construction of structures, concrete roads and bridges along the Besisahar-Chame section, which was damaged by floods and landslides. The total cost of the road from Besisahar to Chame is estimated to be Rs 3 billion.

Satish Subedi, chief of the Dumre-Besisahar-Chame road project, said that the Dumre-Besisahar-Chame road project has sent separate proposals for both the works to the concerned ministry. According to him, floods and landslides triggered by incessant rains from September 22 to 24 had damaged more than 35 places along the 65-kilometer-long Besisahar-Chame road. The track of the road was damaged in six of them.TAG_OPEN_div_23

Project Chief Subedi said that Ram Bazaar, Khotro of Naso Rural Municipality-3 and Koto of Manang were the most affected places. Wooden bridges at different places were also swept away. The road was blocked for six days due to floods and landslides. New tracks had to be opened in different places to open the road.TAG_OPEN_div_21

“The road was brought into operation after the bomb blasting of big boulders that fell from above at Khotro of Naso Rural Municipality-3. Although the road is in operation at present, it needs to be repaired and upgraded at different places,” said Project Chief Subedi. He said that Rs 1 billion would be required to repair roads in the flood-affected areas and construct concrete bridges in place of the wooden bridges that were washed away.

Subedi said that a proposal was sent to the concerned ministry a few days ago demanding the budget accordingly. He said that minor repairs and upgrades are being carried out at various places of the road with the available resources. Dozers and other equipment of the project, local level and hydropower project were mobilized to open the road after the floods and landslides.TAG_OPEN_div_17

Similarly, according to the detailed project report (DPR) prepared three years ago, the total cost of the road from Besisahar to Chame has been estimated at a cost of Rs 3 billion, according to Project Chief Subedi. He said that the project has been sent to the ministry seeking budget as per the DPR.TAG_OPEN_div_15

According to Subedi, if Rs 3 billion is available, along with the overall upgradation of the road, the repair and reconstruction of the flood-damaged places can also be done. He said that the construction of concrete roads and bridges can be started immediately in the affected areas if one billion is available. The Besisahar-Chame road is the main road connecting Lamjung and Manang. The upgradation of the road and the reconstruction of damaged structures are expected to ease the movement of vehicles as well as ease the transportation of locals, tourists and daily consumables.TAG_OPEN_div_13
