8 killed in Indonesia helicopter crash

Kathmandu. Two crew members and six passengers were killed when a private helicopter crashed into dense jungle on Indonesia’s Borneo island, the transport ministry said Friday.

The helicopter, owned by Mathew Air Nusantara, lost contact with air traffic control about five minutes after taking off over West Kalimantan.

A Malaysian national was also on board the plane, Director General of Civil Aviation Lukman F Laisa said in a statement.

“Based on information, a joint search and rescue team located the crash site and confirmed that all passengers and crew members on board were killed,” the statement said.

The bodies were taken to the provincial capital, Pontianack, Med said.

In January, a turboprop helicopter rented by the Ministry of Fisheries crashed in the mountains of Sulawesi island, killing all 10 people on board.

In September last year, a helicopter with six passengers and two crew members on board crashed in the southern province of Kalimantan, killing all the passengers and crew on board.

Earlier, four people were killed when a helicopter crashed in the remote Papua district of Ilaga.
