Kathmandu. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has written to the government to identify the genuine landless squatters and make necessary arrangements.

The NHRC has written to the government to identify and manage the genuine landless squatters who have been living in different places including the Bagmati river since April 25.

“We urge the government of Nepal not to use excessive force and be restrained in the process of evicting houses and tents on the encroached land by identifying the genuine landless squatters by implementing the Commission’s recommendations and the orders issued by the Supreme Court,” the NHRC said in its letter. ”

Assistant spokesperson of the commission, Shyam Babu Kafle, said that the commission has sent a letter to the government today itself seeking information regarding the implementation of the recommendations made by the commission in the past. “The commission had decided on May 15, 2069 to identify the real landless squatters and to manage the landless squatters only after making alternative arrangements for their settlement and to recommend removal of other illegal structures,” he said.

According to him, the letter has sought a progress report on whether the recommendation has been implemented or not, while recalling the information sent to the Government of Nepal for the implementation of the recommendation along with the decision.
