Kathmandu. KATHMANDU: The National Federation of Community Electricity Users has demanded the government to ensure the role of local governments and communities in restructuring the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA). In a press release today, FNCCI President Narayan Gyawali said that the role of local government and community should be ensured while restructuring NRA.
He underscored the need of making the local levels responsible to make the electricity distribution system efficient, control leakage and make the service effective. “Service delivery can be made efficient and accountable only if there is active participation of local government and community organizations in electricity distribution management.”
Among the demands demanded by the Federation be withdrawal of 5 percent VAT on consumers consuming more than 50 units, review of electricity tariff to make it scientific, practical and community-friendly. According to the Federation, it is necessary to increase the consumption in the country as Nepal has the capacity to generate around 4,900 megawatts electricity at present.
