3,671 metric tonnes beans produced in Jumla

. A total of 3,671 metric tonnes of beans were produced in Jumla in the last one year. Agriculture Development Office, Jumla’s chief Ram Bhakta Adhikari said the district earned Rs 13.3 million from the sale of beans in the fiscal year 2081/82.

Beans are grown on 2,257 hectares of land in the district.TAG_OPEN_div_18 According to Adhikari, farmers in Jumla are getting attracted towards beans farming as demand for beans has increased in recent period. Beans are being established as an important cash crop for farmers, said Adhikari.

The farmers of Tila Rural Municipality, Tatopani, Chandannath, Kanakasundari, Patarasi, Hima, Tatopani and Guthichaur areas have earned good income from beans farming.TAG_OPEN_div_16 Karan Budha, a farmer of Tila Rural Municipality-1, said that despite the good condition of beans production, the lack of uniformity in market management and price determination has caused problems to the farmers.

Ward member Bijkali Budha said that farmers of Raragaun of Tila, which is known as the largest bean production center in the district, produced at least 3 to 12 quintals of beans last year.TAG_OPEN_div_14 The National Agriculture Modernization Programme Implementation Unit, Jumla, has implemented the bean zone programme in Tila-1, Rara.

Khem Raj Shahi, chief of the implementation unit of the National Agriculture Modernization Programme in the district, said that the program has been launched to develop commercial production and processing center of beans in 800 hectares of land of wards 2, 8 and 9 of the rural municipality.TAG_OPEN_div_12

Tila farmers say they are compelled to sell beans at Rs 150 per kg through local traders as they did not get proper price for beans.TAG_OPEN_div_10 According to the Agriculture Development Office, the farmers have been providing training on improved seeds, technical assistance and commercial farming.
