Children’s park and child care centre handed over to Birgunj 

. Birgunj: The children’s park and child care established in Birgunj Metropolitan City-8 with the objective of promoting women’s economic empowerment, safe child care and inclusive economic development have been handed over to the ward office on Friday.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Vice President of Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) and Employers Council President Prabal Jung Pandey expressed his confidence that the centre would be an important basis for increasing women’s economic independence and participation in employment.TAG_OPEN_div_34

He said that women would be able to participate in industry, business, service, self-employment and other income-generating activities once the safe, systematic and quality care of children is provided.TAG_OPEN_div_32 “This center is not just a physical structure, it is a doorway to women’s economic independence. It will create an environment conducive for women to be active in employment, self-employment and entrepreneurship by keeping their children in a safe environment,” Pandey said.

He said that although women in Nepal have adequate skills, capacity and willingness to work, their economic participation is limited due to children, senior citizens and household responsibilities.TAG_OPEN_div_30 Studies by the International Labour Organization (ILO) have also pointed to the unequal burden of unpaid care work as a major barrier to women’s economic participation.

Stating that increasing women’s economic participation was not only a matter of social justice but also the basis for sustainable economic development, Pandey said that international studies including the World Bank have shown that increasing women’s participation in labour will increase productivity, increase family income, children’s education, and cooperation among local government, private sector and development partners is an excellent example of public-private partnership.TAG_OPEN_div_28 He stressed the need to further expand such initiatives for entrepreneurship and leadership development.

Similarly, Birgunj Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Hari Gautam said that the private sector has always tried to walk hand in hand with the government.TAG_OPEN_div_26

Parsa Chairman of Janata Samajbadi Party, Ramnaresh Yadav, said that a care center for children is very important.TAG_OPEN_div_24 ILO Madhes Province Coordinator Mahendra Sahani said that the government has collaborated with the local government and the private sector to launch such programmes after the women’s participation in the labour market was found to be low and 40 per cent of the women were not able to participate due to family and social responsibilities.

Assistant Director of Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), Hari Poudel, said that Birgunj Metropolitan City-8 was chosen to operate the centre based on its commercial activities, dense settlement and the presence of women working women.TAG_OPEN_div_22

The center is expected to directly benefit women working in formal and informal sectors, daily wage earners, small entrepreneurs, self-employed women and women in search of jobs.TAG_OPEN_div_20  We also hope that their children will receive quality care in a safe, healthy, learning-friendly and loving environment.

The center is located in the name of IO Nepal, “Strong Women, Prosperous Nepal” Project, Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), Birgunj Metropolitan City, Ward No. 8. The Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) has been established in collaboration with Madhesh Province, Birgunj Chamber of Commerce and Industry and other partner organizations.
