US-Iran tensions escalate: Heightened security alert in UAE, Qatar

Kathmandu. The third phase of the U.S. military operation against Iran was completed on Sunday, the U.S. Central Command said. According to the command, about 140 targets have been attacked in this phase. The Central Command said on X’s social media portal that missiles and drones were targeted, as well as missile and drone launch sites, ammunition storage facilities, communication equipment and other military infrastructure.

Earlier in a statement, the command said that Iran had been given the opportunity to comply with the memorandum of understanding after the attack on the commercial vessel but had failed to do so. Meanwhile, United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations said a container ship caught fire after damage was reported in an incident off the coast of Oman late on Saturday.

According to Iran’s state media ‘Press TV’, explosions have occurred in several cities in southern Iran. At the same time, Iran has launched a series of retaliatory attacks against US targets in the Middle East. The report said there had been attacks in the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, and missile warning sirens had sounded in Bahrain.

Qatar’s interior ministry raised the national security alert for the second time in a matter of hours. The Ministry has urged the people to stay indoors, stay away from glass windows, avoid unnecessary movement and follow the directions provided by the security agencies.

Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed to have destroyed the command and control center and drone hangar of Prince Hassan Air Base in Jordan.

Earlier, Iran announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, saying it had cracked down on a ship that was using an unauthorised route. It also warned that any attempt to avenge the incident would be met with a strong response.

The IRGC navy said in a statement that the action was aimed at ships that had switched off their identification systems, endangering maritime security.

The Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until further notice and an end to US military intervention in the region, the statement said.
