Kathmandu. United States President Donald Trump will make a special appearance at the FIFA World Cup final on Sunday. After the final clash between Spain and Argentina, he will present the trophy to the winning team along with FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

The final in New Jersey will be Trump’s first World Cup appearance. However, his role during the tournament has already sparked controversy.

The impartiality of the tournament was questioned after it was reported that Trump called FIFA president Infantino to revoke or suspend the red card given to American striker Folarin Balogun before the round of 16.

Despite the controversy, Trump has called this World Cup the most successful tournament ever. According to him, this tournament has increased the attraction and popularity of football in the United States.

First Lady Melania Trump, her son Barron Trump and Melania’s father Viktor Naves will also attend the final.

Diplomatic Meeting

The World Cup final is expected to be an opportunity for diplomatic meetings along with sports. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and members of the Spanish royal family will also attend the final. Trump recently criticized Spain for failing to meet its NATO defense spending obligations.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum will also make it to the finals. The United States, Canada and Mexico have been at loggerheads in recent days on trade, immigration and security.

Tight security has been put in place around the stadium in New Jersey in view of Trump’s presence. The airspace around the stadium will be temporarily declared a no-fly zone during his visit.

Close relationship with Infantino

Since Trump returned to the White House for a second term, he has strengthened his relationship with FIFA President Gianni Infantino. He has cited the United States as winning the right to host the World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics as his achievements.

At the FIFA Club World Cup in New Jersey, Trump sat on stage with the winning team after handing over the trophy. He later claimed that the trophy was kept in the White House. However, FIFA said the trophy in the White House was a replica and not an original.
