US Acting Ambassador meets Education Minister, discusses prioritizing education from training to digital education

. U.S. Chargé d’Affaires to Nepal, Scott Urban, paid a courtesy call on Minister for Education and Sports, Sasmit Pokharel, at the latter’s office in Kathmandu today.

During the meeting held at the Singha Durbar-based Singha Durbar, they discussed on further consolidating bilateral relations, common interests and multi-dimensional cooperation, recalling the long diplomatic ties between Nepal and the US.TAG_OPEN_div_20 Similarly, discussions were held on the cooperation received from the US government in education sector and making cooperation more effective in the coming days, development of technical and vocational education, promotion of skill-based education and possible cooperation in sports sector.

The United States has been collaborating in the education sector of Nepal for a long time.TAG_OPEN_div_18 The College of Education and the College of Education has been supported by the United States Government, especially through the United States Agency for Assistance (USAID). On the occasion, Minister Pokharel expressed the belief that the historic, friendly and trust-based relations between Nepal and the US would be further strengthened in the days to come.

Reminding that the incumbent government has been carrying out various reforms in education sector, he said works were underway to revise the national curriculum outline for school education and the ministry was moving ahead to make practical curriculum rather than theoretical.TAG_OPEN_div_16 He also shared that works on revising the curriculum framework were underway to include sports in the school curriculum from the school level.

Minister Pokharel said that the task of evaluating the physical infrastructure of the schools has been forwarded and accordingly budget will be allocated to the schools as per the need in the coming days.TAG_OPEN_div_14 He also pledged to work with priority in the areas of physical infrastructures, educational facilities and teachers’ training. Minister Pokharel also mentioned that there could be a collaboration with the US government in safe school infrastructure, digital and smart learning, teachers’ professional capacity development, school health and nutrition, among others.

On the occasion, Ambassador Arbam said that his country was positive to extend necessary support through bilateral agreement for the development of education and sports sector in Nepal.TAG_OPEN_div_12 Stating that the US government was aware of the various reform programmes initiated by the Ministry of Education and Sports, he said the US was always ready to cooperate and cooperate to that end. He expressed confidence that the US government would continue supporting the efforts of the Government of Nepal for improving public school education.
