Minister for Communications and Information Technology Dr Timilsina and NRNA representatives hold meeting on bringing in more capital and technology in Nepal

Minister for Information and Communications Dr Bikram Timilsina has said that the government has prioritized policy, legal and practical reform so as to link the knowledge, skills, technology and capital of the Non-Resident Nepalis (NRNs) with the development of the country. He also said that the government was ready to invest in various sectors such as information technology, artificial intelligence, data centre and digital infrastructure.

In a meeting with the office-bearers of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) at the Ministry of Information and Communications today, Minister for Communications Dr. Baburam Bhattarai said this during a meeting with the office-bearers of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) at the Ministry of Information and Communications.TAG_OPEN_div_50 On the occasion, Timilsina said that the government was carrying out necessary reforms to create investment-friendly environment in the country. During TAG_OPEN_div_48 the meeting, the NRNA representatives informed about the preparations for the 4th NRNA Global Knowledge Convention-2027 to be held in Kathmandu in January 2027. The conference aims to connect knowledge, skills, experience and innovation of Nepalis around the world with Nepal’s development.

During the discussion, Minister for Communications and Information Technology Dr. Timilsina said that the government was forwarding the process of constructing modern data centers in different places and both domestic and foreign investment was needed in these projects.TAG_OPEN_div_46 Stating that an environment conducive for investment in AI, data center, digital infrastructure and information technology has been created, he said the government was committed to creating more conducive environment for the investors.

He said the Nepalis living abroad have deep love for their country and want to do something for the country are positive.TAG_OPEN_div_44 Pointing out the need to utilize this potential in a policy-level, he urged the Non-Resident Nepalis (NRNs) to contribute to nation building by bringing in skills, technology and capital in Nepal.

Stating that the government was working with the objective of bringing changes in the political culture by giving first priority to good governance and civic service delivery, Minister Timilsina made it clear that the government would move ahead continuously despite several problems and obstacles in the reform efforts.TAG_OPEN_div_42

“Right now, everywhere you look, you just need to improve. There are problems and challenges everywhere. Even if the intention is right, there can be obstacles in the course of work. Now, how to do it is more important than what to do,” he said. Stating that the government has given priority to result-oriented performance rather than process-based working style, he said the government was moving ahead by keeping effective service delivery to the citizens at the centre.

Minister Timilsina said the government was focused on good governance and expansion of digital system by making practical improvements in policy, plan and budget implementation.TAG_OPEN_div_38 NRNA representatives also said that they were ready to collaborate in the implementation of the government’s digital transformation, e-governance, artificial intelligence, good governance and digitalization.

NRNA Vice-President Rojina Pradhan Rai welcomed the government’s decision to provide citizenship certificates with certain rights to Non-Resident Nepalese (NRNs) as a positive step.TAG_OPEN_div_34 He also pointed out the need for the government to forward the bill prepared to amend the act related to Non-Resident Nepalis at the earliest.

“Non-Resident Nepalis are facing various practical problems in terms of buying and selling property in Nepal, obtaining driving license and other services as well as visa related complexities even when they come to their own country,” he said.TAG_OPEN_div_32 He expressed the belief that more skills, technology and capital would be imported to Nepal if the government adopted practical policies as per the concept of ‘One time Nepali, always Nepali’.

NRNA Vice-President Gyanendra Regmi said that Nepalis living abroad have high expectations from the incumbent government and stressed on the effective implementation of economic, social and cultural rights other than the political rights guaranteed by the constitution to the Non-Resident Nepalis.TAG_OPEN_div_30

Stating that although there are some positive policy provisions for the welfare of the Non-Resident Nepalis, there should not be any delay in their implementation, he stressed the need of creating more effective environment linking knowledge, experience, technology and investment of Nepalis abroad.TAG_OPEN_div_28

The NRNA has also expected high-level and official participation of the Government of Nepal in the various international conferences to be organized by the NRNA.TAG_OPEN_div_26 The conference aims to connect knowledge and experience of Nepali experts, researchers, entrepreneurs and investors with the economic, social and technological development of Nepal.
