Kathmandu. US President Donald Trump has warned Iran of “serious consequences” if the Strait of Hormuz does not reopen soon.

Stating that talks between the US, Iran and Oman on the issue of reopening the strait were progressing in a positive direction, he expressed the belief that an agreement would be signed within a day or two.

Speaking to Fox News during a visit to California, Trump said he hoped the Strait of Hormuz would open “very soon”. He warned that if that did not happen, Iran would be “very badly affected” and that the abyss would eventually be opened.

Trump’s comments came after the United States, Iran and Oman reached the final stage of an interim deal to reopen the waters, which Axios reported on Wednesday.

He said the talks between the US and Iran were “very positive” and that both sides were trying to find ways to end the conflict. “The most important thing is, they want to make a deal, let’s see what happens,” Trump said. He said he had “enough time” for diplomatic efforts.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One before flying from California to Las Vegas, Trump said he hoped the deal could be done “by tomorrow or the day after.”

According to Axios, the proposed interim arrangement would ensure safe maritime navigation between Iran and Oman in the Strait of Hormuz for 60 days. There will be an arrangement of not charging any tolls or transit fees from any aircraft during this period and the agreement can be extended further if necessary.

According to the agreement, ships entering the Gulf will use the northern waters of Iranian waters, while those leaving the Gulf will have access to the southern route through Oman’s territorial waters.

The latest tension in the Strait of Hormuz — a key sea route for global oil and natural gas supplies — has sparked growing concerns that it could affect international energy markets and regional security.
