Kathmandu. WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. President Donald Trump’s Marine One military helicopter may have come close to a commercial passenger plane while flying over the United States, U.S. officials have said.

However, the White House has made it clear that President Trump is not in danger at any time.

The New York Times, citing two sources with knowledge of the incident, reported on Tuesday that communication problems with air traffic control caused the distance between Marine One and the passenger plane to be less than a mile.

The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said it was investigating a possible miscarriage between the Marine One plane and a commercial plane that took off from Washington National Airport on August 4.

White House spokesman Kush Desai said Marine One is the world’s best crewed helicopter and there was no safety risk at any stage of the flight.

The US aviation regulator, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), said air traffic controllers were in close contact with the pilots of both flights. The FAA said it is conducting a thorough review of the incident and will take corrective action if necessary.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the safety standard is to maintain a horizontal distance of at least 1.5 miles and a vertical distance of 500 feet. The Embraer E-170, operated by Envoy Air, a subsidiary of American Airlines, was flying around 2:30 p.m. local time, the same newspaper reported.

The Marine One was heading to Andrews Air Force Base at the time of the incident. From there, Trump was scheduled to board a special presidential plane to California.

American Airlines and the US Marine Corps, which operates Marine One, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Air security around Washington National Airport has been under special watch lately. In January 2025, 67 people were killed when a passenger plane collided with a US military Black Hawk helicopter in the same area. After the incident, the FAA tightened air safety standards around the airport.
