Ambulance patient at Mustang Provincial Hospital

Mustang. The ambulance at Jomsom, the only 25-bed state hospital in Mustang, is 15 years old. Due to its dilapidation, it is difficult to take serious patients elsewhere for treatment.

According to Dr Samikshya Kandel, medical superintendent of the hospital, it is difficult to transport the patients inside the hospital as the ambulance breaks down frequently.TAG_OPEN_div_16 “The hospital has only one ambulance, but it is only in name,” he said.

He said that the problem is complicated due to lack of reliable ambulances when serious patients have to be referred to hospitals in Pokhara and other convenient places due to natural disasters, accidents and other reasons.TAG_OPEN_div_14 He lamented that they had repeatedly requested the supply section of the Health Ministry for the supply of new ambulances for the past two years, but they have not received it yet.

} The ambulance of Gharpajhong Rural Municipality near the hospital has also broken down, adding to the problem for the patients. The rural municipality health coordinator Karna Bahadur Thakali admitted that although the rural municipality has an ambulance, it is out of operation at present.

Out of five local levels of Mustang, four have eight ambulances, but only half of them are in operation.TAG_OPEN_div_10 However, there is not a single ambulance in Waragung Mukti Chhetra Rural Municipality.
