Inflation soars above government’s target

Kathmandu. In the last month of the current fiscal year 2082-83, the year-on-year consumer price inflation of the country has reached 5.14 percent. According to Nepal Rastra Bank, such inflation was 2.20 percent in the corresponding period of the previous year. Inflation has exceeded the government’s target. The government had set a target of 5 percent inflation in the last fiscal year.

However, overall, the annual average consumer price inflation for the financial year 2082-83 has come down to 3.08 percent. In the previous fiscal year 2081-82, the annual average inflation was 4.06 percent. On this basis, there has been an improvement in annual average inflation.

The year-on-year inflation of the food and beverage group rose to 5.25 percent in July. In the corresponding month of the previous year, the inflation of this group was 1.19 percent. In the fiscal year 2082-83, the annual average inflation of food and beverage group was 1.04 percent.

In the food group, prices of ghee and oil increased by 10.05 percent, fruits by 7.09 percent and non-alcoholic beverages by 3.28 percent. On the other hand, prices of vegetables fell by 3.95 per cent, spices by 3.66 per cent and pulses by 3.41 per cent. The point inflation of non-food and service group stood at 5.08 percent in June. Under this group, prices of miscellaneous goods and services increased by 17.61 percent, education by 7.04 percent, transportation by 5.80 percent and clothing and footwear by 5.56 percent.

Regionally, Madhesh Province recorded the highest inflation at 5.94 per cent while the Sudurpaschim State recorded the lowest at 4.27 per cent. Inflation rate was recorded at 4.80 per cent in Kathmandu Valley, 5.63 per cent in Terai, 4.97 per cent in Hilly region and 4.04 per cent in the Mountainous region. Similarly, the wage and wage index increased by 6.70 percent in July. It had grown by 2.63 percent in the same month of the previous year. On an average year-on-year, the salary and wage rate index increased by 5.79 percent.

Similarly, the annual average wholesale inflation in the fiscal year 2082-83 was 4.27 percent. It was 3.84 per cent in the previous fiscal year. Wholesale inflation stood at 6.67 percent in July. According to the Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), Nepal’s consumer price inflation of 5.14 percentage points in July 2026 was above 4.45 percent in July 2026.
