Kathmandu. China’s Ministry of Water Resources has said that a large blockage lake has formed near the confluence of the Chochen River and the Purepu Changpo River on the Nepali side. According to Chinese media Global Times, as of Thursday morning, about 2 million cubic meters of water has accumulated in the lake and the water has started to overflow.

According to the ministry, about 30 lakh cubic meters of water is expected to enter the lake in the next three days. Chinese officials have said that the risk of the dam of the lake bursting is high as the amount of water increases.

According to China’s state broadcaster CCTV, the Chinese Ministry of Water Resources is continuously monitoring the condition of the lake. After Wednesday’s floods, the Chinese side has increased surveillance in the border area through drones.

Flood simulations and risk analyses are also underway to assess the impact of flooding that may occur after the lake’s dam burst, the ministry said. China is also preparing for rescue and emergency response in view of the potential risks.

The floods and landslides that started from the Nepal-China border area on Wednesday have caused huge loss of life and property in Rasuwa, Nuwakot and other districts of Nepal. The impact of the floods has also been felt in Tibet of China.

According to Chinese officials, as of Thursday morning, three people had been confirmed dead and two rescued in the incident on the Chinese side. As many as 558 people, including 260 foreigners, were still missing.

On the Nepal side, floods and landslides have caused huge human and physical damage. Alertness is necessary as there is a possibility of a possible lake burst in the border areas as well as the lower coastal areas.
