KATHMANDU: Nepal Police has mobilized 7,992 police personnel in the flood-affected areas for the rescue and relief management of the people.

A large number of police teams from different provinces and police units have been mobilized in the affected areas to resolve multi-dimensional problems and reduce the risk of possible disasters, police said.

Among them, 1,602 police personnel have been mobilized from the Police Headquarters, 2,182 from Bagmati Province Police Office, 1,309 from Gandaki Province, 640 from Lumbini Province and 754 from Kathmandu Valley Police Office. Similarly, 397 police personnel have been mobilized from Police Hospital Maharajgunj, 450 from RPP Maharajgunj, 356 from Police School and 222 from Prayutake Jargah.

An emergency coordination center has been set up at the police headquarters to make disaster management effective. Similarly, a 24-hour ‘Disaster Rescue and Coordination Information Management Center’ has been formed under the leadership of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) for all the work and data management related to disasters.

Focal Desk at Hospitals & Airports

Police have set up focal desks at various hospitals and Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) for providing treatment to the injured and coordinating with the families of the deceased.

A total of 30 police personnel have been deployed at Bir Hospital, 13 at Civil Hospital, 5 at Kathmandu Medical College and 62 at Tribhuvan Teaching Hospital under the leadership of DIG. Eight police personnel led by the SP have been deployed at Tribhuvan International Airport to manage the bodies of domestic and foreign nationals and prepare the details of the injured.

Search by drones and trained dogs

The police have also increased the use of technology to intensify search and investigation in the flood-affected areas. A total of 12 drones have been deployed in Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading. Drones are being used for surveillance and search in remote areas where foot patrolling is difficult, police said.

5 trained dogs have been used for search and 7 satellite phones have been used for information sharing in difficult areas.

A total of 67 police personnel have been deployed for the investigation and investigation of the incident and 715 for the identification and management of the dead bodies. A team of experts has also been deployed for the scientific identification of the dead body and forensic investigation. A team of specialist doctors from the Nepal Police Hospital has been deployed in the affected areas for the immediate treatment of the injured, police said.

Theft and fraudsters arrested in the event of a disaster

After the floods, the police have increased security vigilance to prevent activities like theft, robbery and fraud. During this time, people involved in criminal activities have been arrested in various districts.

Police have arrested Madan Gurung, 25, and Umesh Chaudhary, 38, of Madanpur after a video clip showing them extracting gold ornaments from the body of a woman swept away by the Narayani River went viral on social media.

Similarly, the police have arrested 29 locals on the charge of misappropriating cash by breaking the safe of a bank that was swept away by the flooded Trishuli River at Belkhukhola in Galchi-4 of Dhading. Police have recovered Rs 92,68,505 from them.

Police have arrested 32-year-old Srijan Karki of Gokulganga-2 in Ramechhap district on charge of extorting money from flood victims through Facebook.

Similarly, a safe was found buried in sand and mud while cleaning the road at Galchi-6 Baireni Bazaar in Dhading. The safe, which is 19 inches long and 16 inches wide, has been kept safe at the police post, Baireni. Another safe has been found on the banks of the Parewatar-Malekhu Trishuli River while efforts are being made to remove another safe seen in the Malekhu River, police said.

757 police operations around Narayani

In view of the flow of floods descending from the hilly areas to the Terai, the police have paid special attention to reduce the possible risk. A total of 757 police personnel have been deployed around the Narayani River in Chitwan alone.

The police is also active in removing the physical obstruction, managing the found materials and facilitating the rescue and relief distribution of the affected people.

Nepal Police has said that it has been continuously working by prioritizing the safety, rescue and relief management of the citizens in the sensitive situation of disasters. In addition, the police have also been conducting community awareness programs on the possible risks, urging the citizens of the affected areas to remain patient.
