Bhotekoshi floods: Relatives hoping to identify them through DNA test

Chitwan. The families who have gone missing after the devastating floods in the Bhotekoshi River in Rasuwa are now searching for their children and relatives, who are hopeful that they will be identified through DNA tests.

The District Police Office, Chitwan, Bagmati Province Public Health Laboratory, Bhaktapur (Service Unit, Chitwan) and Public Health Office Chitwan have jointly collected blood samples from the missing people.TAG_OPEN_div_36

Bhagwan Sharma of Kalaiya, Bara, wandered in search of a possible place after his son went missing after the floods in Bhotekoshi. Knowing that his son could be identified if the DNA test was done, he came to Chitwan with a photocopy of his citizenship and his photo. Even though he gave a DNA sample, his heart is still not convinced. He gave the DNA sample so that even if there is a body, he will be identified. But there is still hope in his mind that his son will be found alive.

Similarly, Ram Bahadur Tharu of Bardiya has also been in Chitwan since 11 months in search of his missing son. Tharu, who said that 16 friends including his son were missing in the floods, could not find his son even after seeing many bodies. “I gave blood for DNA matching to see if the body would be found even if I was dead,” he said. He expressed his pain. Tharu still wants to reach the place where his sons went missing and find them. He said that the company where his son works is in Kathmandu and he is preparing to go there after consulting the company. He said that the company is also helping in the search and he hoped that the company would make arrangements to reach the spot.TAG_OPEN_div_32

According to Nirmal Ghimire, chief of the Public Health Office, Chitwan, DNA samples have been extracted from unidentified bodies rescued from the flood-affected areas. He informed that blood is being collected to match the DNA of the dead body and the samples collected from the relatives here. He said that the samples collected here will be sent to the forensic science laboratory for testing.TAG_OPEN_div_30

Police Inspector Sandesh Kumar Pokharel of Nepal Police Forensic Science Laboratory said that the samples of teeth and bones have been collected from the dead bodies and the DNA profile will be prepared from the samples and matched with the DNA of the relatives through software.TAG_OPEN_div_28

} He said, “The first priority is to require the DNA sample of the parents or children (first level relatives). If the first level of relatives is not available, then the sample of the brother or sister can also be tested. ”

Nepal Police has requested the families of the deceased to provide DNA samples to the families of the deceased who are in the country and abroad to hand over the unidentified and abandoned bodies to their relatives.TAG_OPEN_div_24

Relatives and relatives living outside Chitwan can contact the Pathology Lab of the District Police Office or Nepal Police Hospital (Maharajgunj, Kathmandu) along with two passport size photographs and give fresh blood sample.TAG_OPEN_div_22

For relatives living abroad: The first level of relatives living abroad may prepare a DNA profile of the Nepali Embassy in the concerned country, diplomatic mission or the country where they are residing and send a ‘soft copy’ of the same to the official email [email protected] of Nepal Police.
