Search for tunnels will continue until breakthrough: Army

Kathmandu. The Nepal Army has said that the search and rescue operation will not be stopped until there is a breakthrough in the tunnels of the flood-damaged hydropower projects. The army has intensified the search and rescue operations anticipating that around 121 people may have been trapped in the tunnels of the flood-affected hydropower project.

Brigadier General Subash Jung Thapa said that the search and rescue work in the tunnel will continue until there is a breakthrough except in case the government decides to stop the work. According to him, the search is going on at a rapid pace. He said that the army estimates that about 121 people are trapped in the flood-affected hydropower project.TAG_OPEN_div_26

Brigadier General Thapa said that the search and rescue team of Rasuwagadhi Hydropower Project and a team comprising project representatives reached the ‘powerhouse’ and the control point (control room). The Nepal Army has divided the search and rescue into three zones—air, land and tunnel—in the disaster-hit areas.TAG_OPEN_div_24

Similarly, NA Spokesperson and Brigadier General Rajaram Basnet said that the search and rescue operation is being carried out in coordination and cooperation with all the bodies related to the disaster as per the directives of the Government of Nepal. “The Nepal Army is working in coordination and cooperation with all the bodies concerned to provide assistance in the disaster as per the instructions of the Government of Nepal. We are working in three areas: air, land and tunnel search and rescue,” he said.TAG_OPEN_div_22

Brigadier General Basnet said that the rescue operation has been carried out in coordination with the rescue workers who have come to Nepal from abroad. According to him, 45 soldiers of the Nepal Army have also gone missing in the disaster.TAG_OPEN_div_20

On the occasion, NRA Executive Chief Dr. Dharma Raj Upreti said that relief has already reached most of the flood-affected areas. He said that relief has not been transported to some places where relief should be delivered through helicopters as helicopters are being prioritized for search and rescue at present.TAG_OPEN_div_18

He said that efforts are being made to send food items from Trishuli, Rasuwa and other nearby places where helicopters can reach such areas. He said that relief distribution is being carried out in continuous coordination with the local government.TAG_OPEN_div_16

Informing that the search and rescue was going on continuously in the disaster-affected areas, Dr Upreti said that necessary assistance was being taken for search, rescue and relief in coordination with the neighbouring countries. He said that the security agencies have been mobilized round the clock without leaving any stone unturned in search, rescue and relief from the state.TAG_OPEN_div_14
