Kathmandu. Ncell has started providing internet services based on satellite technology to facilitate the search, rescue, and relief work being carried out in the flood-affected areas of the Bhotekoshi River and to prevent communication from being disrupted even in case of emergency.

Devices operated by Eutelsat’s Low Earth Orbit satellite are being installed by Ncell in coordination with the relevant government agencies involved in rescue, relief and restoration efforts at identified critical and necessary locations. This technology provides internet service through satellite even when communication networks are disrupted.

This technology will provide free internet service in flood-affected communities, holding centers and relief distribution centers, temporary camps, emergency work sites, etc. So far, the service has been made available in three important places of Nuwakot through this technology and the work of connecting other flood-affected places is going on.

In this technology, a device connected to the ground receives an internet signal from the satellite. The device then provides Wi-Fi service through another device in the surrounding area. Although ordinary internet and mobile service is not available, this technology provides internet service.

This technology provides high-speed and low-latency connectivity which means people can use it to exchange messages, internet-based calls, access important information, browsing and coordinate relief efforts.

Ncell has received the necessary approvals from government agencies including Nepal Telecommunication Authority for this service.

“We have established satellite communication access in three places of Nuwakot where road infrastructure and communication services are severely affected. This will facilitate rescue and relief operations and help the affected locals stay in touch during this difficult time,” said Dilli Ram Shrestha, Chief Corporate and Regulatory Officer of Ncell.

Since day one, Ncell has been providing free voice, data, and SMS services to over 3 lakh affected customers in flood-affected areas every day. The company has also contributed Rs 1 crore to the Prime Minister Natural Disaster Relief Fund for rescue, relief and rehabilitation through Ncell Foundation.

Providing internet through satellite at a time when it is essential to stay in touch with each other is a strong proof of Ncell’s determination to always stand with the people of Nepal. This action of Ncell shows that it is not limited to resuming the blocked service.
