Kathmandu. The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) is currently studying the possibility of bringing water to Sundhara, Kathmandu.
In the current context of the construction of big structures and infrastructures around Sundhara, the study is being done by consulting services for the work of bringing water to the taps and opening the drains.
Inspecting a well dug in the west corner of Tundikhel and south of Mahankal to study the amount of water at the ground level, Acting Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City Sunita Dangol directed the people not to waste a single moment except the time required for the study while searching for the source of water and the outlet. “Water has to be poured into Sundhara. Its outlet has to be opened. That is our Arjuna vision. Work with determination to achieve that goal.” She directed the consultant to continue working and keep the Department of Heritage and Tourism under constant supervision.
There can be different approaches to bring water to Sundhara. But our goal is to make water flow naturally.” Dangol clarified the goal. She inspected the study along with Kumari Rai, head of the Department of Heritage and Tourism and engineers.
On the occasion, water conservation expert Bishwa Prakash Amatya said that the next process can be said after studying the availability of water in the well.
Today, the surface of the well is 10 feet below the place where the well was dug. Only water above 10 feet from the place where the well was dug can go into the Sundhara. Therefore, the well is dug 10 feet deep. Its diameter is 3.5 feet.
During the digging of the well, samples of the soil found every 1 foot and the change in the layer were taken. Water availability can also be analyzed by testing this soil. Underground water resources expert Dr. Bijayaman Shakya said.
In Sundhara, B.S. No. There was a water drain until 041 B.S. When a multi-storey building started being constructed near Sundhara (Kathmandu Mall). During the digging of its foundation, the water was stopped by the iron plates. Local Gautam Dangol says, “In 2056 B.S., an attempt was made to bring water to the tap. Water also came. However, the water coming had to be stopped as the drain could not be opened. After the earthquake of 2072, while rebuilding the Dharahara, the old system was also affected when a large structure was built. Dangol narrated the story of the availability of water and the drainage.
