Upper Myagdi-1 tunnel ‘breakthrough’

Myagdi. The 53.5 MW Upper Myagdi-1 hydropower project has been ‘breakthrough’ since the audit of the tunnel towards the dam.

The tunnel linking the under-construction powerhouse at Malika rural municipality-7 Bharwang from audit of the project to Chhahari of Dhawalagiri rural municipality-4 has been connected on Wednesday.TAG_OPEN_div_28

Project chief Jyoti Kumar KC said that the breakthrough of the 2,506.39-meter tunnel connecting the audit to the dam has been completed. “Out of the 3,283.32 meters tunnel from the audit of Chhahari to the dam side at Khamla of Dhawalagiri Rural Municipality-4, the construction of 1,973 meters has been completed so far,” he said, adding that the remaining tunnel is also being completed within a few months.TAG_OPEN_div_26 ”

KC informed that 56 percent of the physical progress has been made so far and it will be completed within the next one year. The civil contractor Luna Builders and Contractor, which signed the agreement on Chaitra 19, 2080 BS and was deployed on May 12, 2081, had started the construction of the main tunnel from August 1, 2081 BS.TAG_OPEN_div_24

The construction of dams, tunnels and power houses as well as hydro and electromechanical works have been accelerated. The Phaperkhet landslide on the Beni-Darbang road during the rainy season, the Dukhukhola road bridge at risk and the delay in the construction of the Shivaratri river road bridge have affected the construction of hydropower projects including Upper Myagdi-1.

The powerhouse of the project will be constructed at Malika Rural Municipality-7 with an investment of Rs TAG_OPEN_div_20 11.23 billion to be raised through the loans of six banks, promoter companies and general public.

The project will connect 315.01 gigawatt hours of electricity to the central grid from the 132 kV substation being constructed by Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) at Malika Rural Municipality-7 by constructing a 1.5-km 132 kV transmission line from Bharwang.TAG_OPEN_div_18

The height of the power house from the outlet of the run-of-the-river nature project is 196 meters. A 692-meter penstock pipe will be installed to divert water from the outlet to the power house. Energy Engineering and Management Solutions Pvt. Ltd. is the consultant and the mechanical and electro-mechanical contractor of the project is in the process of being selected. The promoter company of Upper Myagdi-1 is affiliated to Energy Developers Pvt. Ltd.
