Bhotekoshi floods cause loss of over Rs 1 billion to agriculture, livestock worth Rs 1.11 billion

{{TAG_OPEN_div_46} Kathmandu. The report prepared by the National Planning Commission and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (RNDN) has shown that the agriculture sector has suffered a lot due to the devastating floods in Rasuwa and surrounding Bhotekoshi.

The floods have caused significant damage, especially in the paddy, vegetable and livestock sectors. According to the available data, 1,669 hectares of paddy cultivation has been affected in various local levels of the affected areas. Out of which 5,843 tonnes of paddy production has been damaged.

Similarly, 1,843 tons of vegetables have been damaged due to the disruption of 137 hectares of land towards vegetable cultivation. Geographically, Bidur, Likhu and Belkotgadhi of Nuwakot, Benighat Rorang, Gajuri, Siddhalek and Galchhi of Dhading, Gandaki and Shahid Lakhan of Gorkha have been affected.TAG_OPEN_div_42

In Bidur of Nuwakot alone, 700 hectares of paddy production land has been affected, causing damage to 2,450 tonnes of paddy. Of the 230 hectares in Likhu, 805 tonnes of paddy has been affected and 200 hectares in Belkotgadhi have been damaged.

25 hectares of paddy cultivation in Benighat Rorang, 75 hectares in Gajuri, 58 hectares in Siddhalek and 87 hectares in Galchhi have been affected. According to the report, 140 hectares of paddy cultivation in Gosainkunda and 143 hectares in Uttargaya of Rasuwa have been affected.

In terms of vegetables, Bidur of Nuwakot seems to have been the most affected. An estimated 1,323 tonnes of vegetable production has been damaged due to the impact of 98 hectares of vegetable area in Bidur. Nine hectares of vegetable land in Benighat Rorang of Dhading, seven hectares in Gajuri, two hectares in Siddhalek and 14 hectares in Galchi have been affected.

The floods have also caused significant damage to the livestock sector. According to the available data, a total of 2,52,445 livestock have been affected. The estimated value of the damage to the livestock is Rs 111.39 crore.TAG_OPEN_div_32

The largest number is of chickens. About 2,14,827 chickens have been affected by the floods. In terms of numbers, it is 85.1 percent of the total livestock, but the value share of chickens is only 4.8 percent of the total damage.

It is estimated that 4,572 buffaloes have been affected by the floods and it has reached Rs 45.72 crore. This is 41 per cent of the total livestock loss. Similarly, Rs 39.13 crore or 35.1 per cent of the total loss has been caused to goat÷mountain goats and cattle have suffered Rs 17.92 crore or 16.1 per cent.

Other animals suffered damages worth Rs 10.4 million, pig÷boar Rs 19.6 million, sheep Rs 2.5 million, chickens Rs 53.7 million and other birds around Rs 100,TAG_OPEN_div_26 000 respectively, according to the data.

Out of the total livestock losses, 92.3 per cent of the damage was caused by buffaloes, goats÷mountain goats and cattle alone. This shows that the impact of floods on farmers’ income and livestock rearing on the rural economy is also serious.TAG_OPEN_div_24
