Kathmandu. At a time when there is a shortage of sugar in the market and the price is increasing, the government has claimed that more than 1,000 outlets in the valley are selling sugar at the rate of Rs 110 per kg.

The Department of Commerce, Supply and Consumer Protection has made this claim. The department monitored the situation of the supply and sale of sugar in the Kathmandu Valley. After the inspection, more than 1,000 outlets in the Kathmandu Valley including Bhatbhateni, Big Mart, Selsberry have been selling sugar at the rate of Rs 110 per kg.

The floods and landslides in the Bhotekoshi River have disrupted the road along the Krishna Bhir section of the Prithvi Highway and India’s decision to ban the export of sugar has triggered a shortage of sugar during the festive season.

A meeting was held on September 15 under the chairmanship of Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies with the concerned stakeholders.

According to the Department, the floods and landslides triggered by the Bhotekoshi River and landslide along the Krishnabhir section of the Prithvi Highway have disrupted the road and the ban imposed on the export of sugar by India has resulted in shortage of sugar, an essential food item during the festivals.

The department has informed all the consumers about the sale and distribution of sugar and claimed that there is easy and adequate supply of sugar.

The department has requested consumers not to stock more sugar than required in the apprehension of shortage of sugar in the market. The department has urged people to buy only as per the general requirement as there is sufficient supply of sugar and storing it unnecessarily.
