KATHMANDU: Artificial intelligence (AI) will be a major concern between the two countries when Chinese President Xi Jinping meets US President Donald Trump next week.

The U.S. and China are at loggerheads over AI development, access to cutting-edge chips, and security standards.

The U.S. and China are the major drivers of AI development. The open models of Chinese companies, including DipSeek and Moonshot AI, are competing with U.S. OpenAI and Anthropic systems. Although the U.S. has been restricting the export of advanced chips to curb China’s AI development, the Trump administration has relaxed regulations on some chips and maintained restrictions on other technologies.

With the rapid development of AI, concerns about security and regulation have also increased. In the US, there is a strong belief that AI development should not be slowed down due to competition with China, while China also sees AI as a key geopolitical competitive area.

While there is limited potential for cooperation on AI in the upcoming meeting, it will be difficult to reach consensus on slowing development or setting global safety standards, analysts say.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant said that the US and China are the world’s first and second major powers in AI, so we need to develop risk mitigation measures and close communication between the two sides.
