Kathmandu. Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) lawmaker Gyanendra Shahi has accused the government of appointing ambassadors against its own standards.

Speaking at the meeting of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, Shahi claimed that the government itself has violated the criteria set by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the appointment of ambassadors.

According to him, point number 10 of the criteria for the appointment of ambassadors prepared by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has made a provision that employees working in an international or foreign aid organization would not be eligible for the post of ambassador.

Similarly, point 14 of the criterion states that a foreign donor or who has been appointed to a post with salary from the state in the past can be appointed as an ambassador only after at least 10 years of separation from the post.

“The government has violated the standards set by itself,” he said. Shahi said that the proposed ambassador to the US, Chiranjivi Thapa had worked as a regional security advisor to the US and claimed that the appointment was not in line with the standards.

He also questioned the appointment of Prapti Sherchan, who is proposed to be ambassador to Spain, who is working at the International Finance Corporation (IFC) under the World Bank, and Saru Joshi as ambassador to Germany has worked in international organizations including UN Women.

Shahi said the government should follow its own standards while appointing ambassadors.
