KATHMANDU: At least two people have been killed and five others injured in Japan’s powerful Taifun Dujuan. Heavy rains and landslides have disrupted power supply to thousands of homes around Tokyo, officials said.

By Tuesday morning, Taifun had moved away from the coast of Japan and headed for the Pacific Ocean. As the typhoon weakened, officials lifted most warnings about the risk of heavy rain and landslides.

One of the world’s biggest video game trade shows in Tokyo was also canceled ahead of schedule due to taifun.

In Japan, powerful taifuns occur from the end of summer to the beginning of autumn. Earlier, some of the ongoing Asian Games events in Japan were affected due to other typhoons this season.

According to Japan’s Fire and Disaster Management Agency, one person was killed in Kanagawa Prefecture, near Tokyo. One person was also killed in Chiba Prefecture, according to local officials.

Japan’s public broadcasting agency NHK said search and rescue operations were underway for four people who went missing in landslides triggered by torrential rains. As of Tuesday morning, power was without power to more than 46,000 homes in the Chiba area near Tokyo.

Although Taifun weakened and moved to the northeast, some parts of the Tokyo area received heavy rainfall. Oshima Island, about 120 kilometers south of Tokyo, recorded 832 millimeters of rain in 48 hours. This is more than double the average rainfall for the month of September.

Tokyo’s Edogawa ward received 282.5 millimeters of rain in 24 hours, which is the record rainfall there.

According to scientists, climate change caused by human activities is increasing the risk of excessive rainfall. Scientists say that as the temperature rises, the atmosphere will hold more water vapour, which will increase the chances of heavy rainfall.
