KATHMANDU: Manoj Subedi, a youth leader of Nepal Student Union, has been elected unopposed as a regional representative of Nepali Congress from Paiyun Rural Municipality-6, Saraukhola of Parbat. 23-year-old Subedi is currently the president of NSU of Gandaki University. He is a law student and is very popular among the youth.

Active in NC politics for 15 years, he became the district joint secretary of the NSU at the age of 19 and the university president at the age of 21. He said that he will always work to ensure that the Congress does not deviate from the ideological path.

He said that the special general convention held in December amended the statute to include 35-year-old youths from ward to center, which has made it easier for the new generation to come into politics. However, he said that if there is a provision to become a member of the House of Representatives at the age of 25, there will be no real representation of the youth by keeping only the quota of 35 years. Subedi said that a separate group should be formed to bring the ‘Genji’ youths below 28 years of age directly into the party structure.

He stressed that the Congress should now transform from the traditional ‘brother-brother’ party to become a fully youthful party. He said that the Congress should also be made youth-oriented according to the changing international politics. He made it clear that the Congress can become the first choice of the new youth only if the ideological mechanism which has been dormant for a long time is activated and result-oriented politics is practiced.
