{{TAG_OPEN_div_36} Nuwakot. The construction of a suspension bridge has eased the movement of people who were obstructed after the Bhotekoshi flood swept away two concrete bridges over the Trishuli River at Bidur Municipality-1 in Nuwakot. Although the bridge connecting Dhunge and Trishuli bazaars is yet to be completed, it has been brought into operation considering the difficulties of the locals.

Locals had to use tuins and ziplines to cross the river after the flood swept away the bridge on August 10. It was especially difficult to travel to the settlements across the river, including Trishuli Bazaar, which was directly affected by the floods. With the operation of the suspension bridge, it has become easier for the locals to commute as well as to transport relief materials and rehabilitate them.

According to Shailendra Raj Pyakurel, president of Nuwakot Contractors’ Association, the bridge has been brought into operation keeping in mind the needs of the locals after the completion of the main crossing structure and installation of logs. However, some works including tying auxiliary logs at four places on both sides of the bridge are still pending.TAG_OPEN_div_32

“This is the first bridge constructed for the construction of the river after the Bhotekoshi flood damaged the Trishuli River and the surrounding rivers and structures above the river,” said Pyakurel, adding, “We will complete the remaining work of the bridge.” “We have brought the construction into operation before the completion of the bridge to reduce the hardships faced by the residents of the flood-affected areas during the festival and in commuting through the tuins.” ”

There is a problem of the bridge shaking during the crossing as some structures of the bridge are yet to be constructed. However, citing the technicians, the construction team has said that a large number of passengers can pass through the bridge at once.

Rajan Shrestha, mayor of Bidur Municipality, said that the locals had to travel through risky means as the concrete structures used to cross the Trishuli River have been damaged due to the floods. He said that the construction of the suspension bridge has eased after the construction of the suspension bridge, which could allow a limited number of passengers to cross the river through tuin and zipline.TAG_OPEN_div_26

The estimated cost of the bridge was Rs 3.TAG_OPEN_div_24 18 crore. So far, Rs 16.8 crore has been spent and another Rs 10 lakh worth of work is yet to be done, according to the construction team. The Federation of Contractors’ Association of Nepal (FCAN) has committed to provide Rs 15 million for the construction of the bridge, said Nicholas Pandey, president of the federation. The amount has been ensured through the Contractors’ Fund and the remaining amount will be borne by the Nuwakot Contractors’ Association.

With the operation of TAG_OPEN_div_22 the bridge, it has become easier to reach the settlements of Bidur Municipality-7, 8, 9 and 12 via Trishuli Bazaar, which was directly affected by the flood from the stone of Bidur Municipality-1. Similarly, other settlements of Bidur Municipality, Kispang and Myagang rural municipalities of the district, wards 1, 2 and 3 of Rasuwa and Dhading have also been facilitated.

The bridge has also made it easier to travel to Trishuli Hospital across the Trishuli River, Nepal Electricity Authority’s Nuwakot distribution center and schools. As the road network is connected on both sides of the bridge, passengers will be able to reach their destination by vehicle after crossing the river.

In the absence of the bridge, it was difficult to remove the debris piled up by the floods in the Trishuli Bazaar area, search for buried structures and transport essential commodities including food across the river. With the operation of the suspension bridge, it is expected that the relief, rescue and rehabilitation activities of the flood-affected areas will be further facilitated.TAG_OPEN_div_18
