Dang. The dairy farmers here are suffering due to not getting the price according to their hard work and investment. They have to work hard in the animal husbandry business, but they are not getting the price according to it.

There is a problem in the milk value chain as the farmers who produce milk do not get the right price and the consumers have to pay comparatively high prices. The farmers have demanded that the transparent details of the cost and profit from the production to the consumers should be made public. They say that if the farmers are to be encouraged to produce, then the fair price of milk should be ensured.

Both producers and consumers have been affected by the dairies and businessmen who buy milk from farmers at low prices and sell it to consumers at a higher price. Gopal Khanal, who runs Green Laxmi Cow and Buffalo Farm in Ghorahi Sub-Metropolitan City-2, Rampur, produces more than 100 liters of milk daily. He said that about 65 liters of milk produced is sold to the dairy and the rest of the milk is sold to the consumers at home.

According to Khanal, the price of buffalo milk is not more than Rs 75 per liter when milk is sold to the dairy. The price of cow milk is Rs 65 per liter. However, the same milk is sold to the consumers up to Rs 100 per liter. He said that although the cost of production of cow and buffalo milk is different, the consumers have to pay almost the same price for both types of milk. “Farmers are not involved in the price fixation,” he said.TAG_OPEN_div_23

He said that although the cost of feed, bran, grass, medicine and veterinary treatment has increased, the price of farmers has not increased accordingly. He said that the income of the farmers has decreased due to the increase in the cost of production. Although the cost of milk has increased, the dairy entrepreneurs have increased the price of curd, paneer and ghee produced from milk. The traders have increased the price of curd, paneer and ghee from milk as the cost of milk has increased. The traders committee Ghorahi has increased the price with effect from September 1. He said that the price of these items has been increased due to the increase in the cost.TAG_OPEN_div_21

At present, curd is priced at Rs 140 per liter, paneer at Rs 900 per kg and ghee at Rs 1,450 per kg. A farmer in Ghorahi says that he sells milk for Rs 70 to Rs 75 per liter. He said that he gets up to Rs 75 per liter as he transports milk to the concerned place on his own motorcycle. However, due to the transportation cost, time and labor involved in transporting milk to the market, the real income is even lower.TAG_OPEN_div_19

The farmers complain that despite the investment and labor, their role in determining the price is weak. They say that the cost of feed, medicines, labor, electricity, water and animal health services has increased for animal husbandry, but the price of milk has not been adjusted according to the cost.TAG_OPEN_div_17

The farmers have demanded that the cost of production should be scientifically calculated while determining the price of milk, ensuring the representation of farmers and also assessing the cost of supplying milk to the market.TAG_OPEN_div_15
