Contractors commit to bring East-West Highway into operation by December

Kathmandu. Contractors have pledged to complete the construction of Dudhaura bridge along the Pathlaiya-Dhalkebar section of the East-West Highway by mid-December.  Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Physical Infrastructure and Transport, and Urban Development Minister Kulman Ghising on Friday inspected the bridge construction site.

On the occasion, Minister Ghising held discussion with Director General of Department of Roads and contractors regarding the schedule of bridge construction, remaining works and problems.TAG_OPEN_div_25 Stating that the passengers have been facing inconvenience as the bridge has not been constructed for a long time, Minister Ghising said that the construction of the bridge along the main highway should not be stopped and should be completed immediately. He said that the construction work will not be affected due to the 11 KV transmission line passing near the bridge.

Ravi Singh of Mahadev Khimti-Hirachan Undertaking (JV), Kathmandu, which was awarded the contract for the construction of the bridge, has pledged to complete the bridge within the deadline.TAG_OPEN_div_23 Singh, who is also the president of the Federation of Contractors’ Associations of Nepal, said that the bridge would be completed by mid-January and handed over to the Department of Roads.

The contract for the construction of the 90-meter four-lane concrete bridge was signed with Mahadev Khimti-Hirachan Undertaking (JV) on July 24, 2018 at a cost of Rs 172 TAG_OPEN_div_22.2 million. As per the agreement, the bridge construction was supposed to be completed by July, 2078 BS. As per the latest deadline, the bridge construction has to be completed by mid-January. The physical progress of the bridge is 85 percent.

Locals have demanded the immediate completion of the Manamat-Kalaiya-Matirwa road section of the Postal Highway.TAG_OPEN_div_19  Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Physical Infrastructure and Transport and Urban Development Kulman Ghising, who reached Kalaiya during an onsite inspection of the construction of road, irrigation and electricity projects in Bara, Parsa and Rautahat districts of Madhes province, said that the locals have been facing a lot of problems due to the lack of road in the district headquarters. Minister Ghising said that the government would forward the contract for the construction of the road after taking appropriate decision.

The contract for the upgrading of the 4-km road was signed on January 27, 2078 with Om Sai and Company (JV), Kathmandu for Rs 223.1 million.TAG_OPEN_div_17 The initial contract was signed to complete the project by 1 Magh 2079, but the deadline extended for the second time is expiring on Chaitra 4, 2082. Only 20 per cent of the road construction has progressed.

The construction of the road has been stalled due to the poor performance of the contractors.TAG_OPEN_div_15 The contractor was asked to publicly explain why the contract was not terminated on September 13. Since then, contractors have been mobilized at the construction site, but no significant progress has been made so far.
