Students stranded in Iran allowed to leave, flights suspended

Kathmandu. Tehran has announced that it will allow foreign nationals studying in the country’s educational institutions to leave the country, providing relief to students, including Indians, stranded in the Middle East region amid escalating tensions in the region.

Students will be allowed to appear for their final exams and their papers will be allowed later, the dates of which will be announced later, Tasnim News reported, citing the country’s Ministry of Education.

Universities and public institutions in Iran have been temporarily closed and international flights have been suspended. Indian authorities have repeatedly issued warnings urging their students to leave Iran, but the closure of airspace has complicated evacuation efforts.

Students in Tehran, Urmia and other regions are facing limited access to essential services, including hospitals and educational institutions, and operations have been suspended for the next 15 days.

“All universities will provide necessary support to foreign students who want to leave the country and announce alternative timings for the conduct of final term examinations,” Tasnim News said.

The Embassy of India is in constant touch with the students, providing guidance on evacuation routes to neighbouring countries such as Armenia and Azerbaijan. However, officials acknowledge that the immediate evacuation remains a complex challenge due to international airspace restrictions and continued missile attacks.

Students and families have expressed concerns about safety, communication delays and assistance, and the need for coordinated international efforts to secure their safe return in the midst of the crisis.
