Inflation rises nearly 1 percentage point in a month

Kathmandu. Nepal’s year-on-year consumer price inflation rose to 3.25 percent in February. Consumer inflation increased from 2.42 percent in January last year. Compared to the same month of the previous fiscal year, inflation has decreased. In the previous year, inflation was 4.16 percent.

During the review month, food and beverages inflation stood at 2.50 percent and non-food and service inflation stood at 3.66 percent. In the corresponding period of the previous year, inflation of these groups was 4.95 percent and 3.74 percent, respectively.

The average inflation in the first seven months of the fiscal year 2082÷83 was 1.92 percent. In the corresponding period of the previous year, the average inflation rate was 4.86 percent.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) of the vegetable sub-group under the food and beverage group increased by 11.63 percent in the review period. The price of ghee and oil increased by 7.61 percent and fruits by 7.41 percent. However, the index of lentils and legumes sub-group decreased by 5.19 percent, food and food products by 2.97 percent and spices by 2.61 percent.

The price index of miscellaneous goods and services sub-group under non-food and service group increased by 21.98 percent. Likewise, the prices of education increased by 7.46 per cent, clothing and footwear by 5.28 per cent, tobacco by 4.15 per cent and alcoholic beverages by 3.85 per cent. The media sub-group index decreased by 0.08 percent.

In the review month, the annual Consumer Price Index of the rural areas increased by 2.52 percent while the urban areas increased by 3.51 percent.

Province-wise, Madhes Province recorded the highest inflation of 5.14 percent. Koshi Province recorded 3.53 per cent, Bagmati Province 3.10 per cent, Lumbini Province 3.29 per cent and Gandaki Province 2.42 per cent. Karnali Province recorded 1.62 percent inflation while Sudurpaschim Province recorded 1.64 percent inflation.

Geographically, the annual point inflation in Kathmandu Valley stood at 3.48 percent. Inflation was recorded at 3.66 per cent in the Terai, 2.68 per cent in the hilly region and 2.58 per cent in the mountainous region.

Meanwhile, the annual wholesale inflation stood at 6.21 percent in February 2022. In the corresponding month of the previous year, it was 3.47 percent.

In the review month, the inflation of wholesale goods of consumer goods was 0.72 percent, that of intermediate goods was 9.83 percent and that of capital goods was 3.21 percent. The Wholesale Price Index of construction materials increased by 2.04 percent.

Nepal’s year-on-year consumer price inflation stood at 3.25 per cent while India’s inflation stood at 2.75 per cent in January 2026.
