Kathmandu. A team of 35 people has successfully climbed the 6,355-meter high Riot Peak in Taplejung.

A total of 35 people including 29 participants and six trainers successfully climbed the peak in the second summer skill development training jointly organized by Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) and Sustainable Tourism Project (STP).

President of Nepal Prabhtaran Association, Phur Gelje Sherpa, said that the participants climbed Riot Peak as part of the training aimed at acquiring knowledge, skills and practical experience to become professional mountain guides.

According to him, during the training, the participants were given theoretical knowledge, rock climbing and preliminary training in Kathmandu. After that, they were taken to Danga Peak in the Kanchenjunga area of Taplejung and given live practice in the mountainous environment.

According to the NMA, the main objective of the training is to provide first-hand experience of the challenges and risks faced while working as a mountain guide in high mountainous areas. The participants said that while practising in the mountains, the participants got an opportunity to apply the mountain geography, climbing techniques, safety and skills to work in difficult conditions.

According to NMA President Sherpa, Riot Peak is an important part of the climbing training. Mountaineer Temba Chhiri Sherpa said that the exercise will test the technical ability of the participants and boost the confidence and competence needed to work as a professional mountain guide in the future.

The second summer skill development training was conducted with the participation of 29 participants, including six trainers. NMA’s Deepak Gurung informed that the training team returned to Kathmandu after the successful completion of the training and Riot Peak climbing. The training was conducted under the CTEVT-approved 1,696-hour professional mountain guide course.

The curriculum covers the theoretical knowledge required for mountain guides, including rock climbing, practice in the mountainous region and working in a real mountain environment.

NMA has congratulated all the participants who successfully completed the training and climbed Riot Peak. The association also expressed its gratitude to the six coaches and the entire training team who played an important role in conducting the training.

At a time when the need for skilled and professional guides is increasing along with the expansion of mountain tourism in Nepal, such practical training is expected to contribute to make mountain tourism more safe, systematic and professional.
