Washington. Us President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced that a 25 per cent tariff will be imposed on goods imported from India. He also expressed deep concern over India’s large-scale purchase of arms and energy from Russia and indicated that further action would be taken in this regard.
“India is our friend, but it has adopted the highest income tariffs and complex trade rules in the world, due to which trade relations have not become relatively strong,” Trump said in a message posted on the social network ‘Truth Social’. ’
He described the US-India trade deficit as “huge” and said the decision was needed to improve it. President Trump has taken India’s proximity to Russia and military and energy purchases seriously in the context of the Ukraine war.
“India and China are russia’s biggest energy buyers at a time when the world is urging Russia to stop the violence in Ukraine,” Trump said.
However, he is yet to give a clear description of the additional ‘action’ to be taken against India. According to analysts, this decision has been taken to put pressure on Russia and to balance the trade.
President Trump gave Russian President Putin 10 days to end the War in Ukraine, warning that more drastic steps would be taken if the route was not changed during that period.
India and the US have held extensive trade talks in the recent past. However, there has been no agreement between India’s vigilance and the Trump administration’s strong demands on opening up agricultural and dairy sectors.
Currently, most goods sent from India to the US are being charged about 10 percent income tax, which is now set to increase to 25 percent.
At the same time, President Trump has threatened to impose new tariffs with other countries to maintain the balance of trade. He expressed the possibility of imposing up to 50 percent income tax on Brazil.
