Voice. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has stressed that the landlocked developing countries should not be left behind in the global trade system.
Co-chairing a roundtable on ‘Trade and Commerce Facilitation and Regional Cooperation’ as part of the third United Nations Conference of Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) here today, he stressed the need for collective pressure for fair trade terms and transit arrangements.
“The Sevia Commitment Action Plan, which we passed in June this year, also focuses on infrastructure construction, smart trade, investment in corridors, development of transport and logistics industries, digitisation of trade and customs procedures. A strong commitment is required for its full and effective implementation,” he said, adding that with the honest implementation of these measures, landlocked countries can harness their trade potential for inclusive and sustainable development. For this, we need to strengthen cooperation and partnership at bilateral, regional and multilateral levels. ’
He called for deepening regional integration and promoting meaningful partnerships by promoting trade in information technology, manufacturing and services, and reiterating our commitment to double these countries’ share in global trade, expand service exports, and promote a more diverse and resilient economy.
Urges to increase South–South cooperation
Addressing a ministerial meeting on South-South Cooperation under the Summit, PM Oli stressed the need for sustainable resource mobilization to achieve measurable results, including knowledge exchange, to meet the immense possibilities and immediate needs.
“Based on unity, mutual respect and shared ownership, South-South cooperation promotes mutual learning, capacity development and technology transfer in line with the unique needs and aspirations of THE LLDC, which will help build equitable and inclusive growth,” he said, adding, “We should use South-South and triangular cooperation to promote regional integration by investing in flexible physical and digital infrastructure.” ’
Prime Minister Oli called for collective work to develop trade and transit corridors, modernize infrastructure, increase cross-border trade and investment, and embrace digital transformation to meaningfully participate in the global digital economy.
