Beirut. Discuss a long-term ceasefire with Israel
U.S. Special Envoy for Lebanon Tom Barak said on Monday that his team would discuss a long-term ceasefire with Israel after Lebanon backed a U.S.-backed plan to disarm Hezbollah.
After a meeting with President Joseph Aoun, Barack said Washington would prepare a financial proposal for post-war reconstruction. He is also scheduled to meet Prime Minister Nawaf Salam and Speaker Nabih Berri. Barry will often hold talks on behalf of Hezbollah.
Barak said, “The Lebanese government has completed the first step. Now Israel should make equal efforts. ’
Last week’s decision has alarmed Iran-backed Hezbollah and its allies. Hezbollah Secretary General Nayeem Qasem has pledged to fight disarmament efforts. This has increased the fear of civil war in the country.
Barak warned that he would miss the opportunity if Hezbollah did not support the call. Both Aoun and Salam have called for Hezbollah and other armed groups to disarm and israel to stop attacks and withdraw the occupation.
Aoun said he wanted to increase funding and raise support from international donors to increase lebanon’s military capabilities. The World Bank estimates that at the end of 2024, the war between Hezbollah and Israel caused an economic loss of about $11.1 billion in southern and eastern Lebanon.
