House of Representatives meeting: Urged to meet demands of sugarcane farmers on time

Kathmandu. Lawmakers have urged the government to fulfill the demands of the agitating sugarcane farmers in Maitighar on time. Speaking at the emergency hour of the House of Representatives, they stressed the need of fulfilling the demands of sugarcane farmers and setting an environment for dialogue to boost their morale.

Lawmaker Ganesh Parajuli urged the government to address the demands of sugarcane farmers on time. Stating that Limpiyadhura belongs to Nepal, he said the agreement signed between India and China to use the Lipulek route was wrong. He urged the government to hold a diplomatic dialogue on the issue.

Lawmaker Gyan Bahadur Shahi said the issue of Lipulekh and Limpiyadhura should be raised in the United Nations. Stating that the subsidy of sugarcane farmers has been reduced, he urged them to address their demands on time. Lawmaker Narayan Prasad Saud also stressed the need for providing arrears to sugarcane farmers on time.

Lawmaker Achyut Prasad Mainali urged the government to take initiatives to reduce human-wildlife conflict. “Despite the increase in the number of tigers, habitat has become a challenge. With the increase in tigers, people have been attacked. Wildlife habitats should be managed,” he said.

Devendra Poudel stressed that the subsidy of sugarcane farmers should not be cut. “The government should also take seriously the issue of farmers getting fertilizers on subsidy,” he said. Lawmaker Krishna Kumar Shrestha complained that the government was not interested in controlling wildlife as the general public was not safe after the wildlife started attacking them.

Lawmaker Nagina Yadav said the scrap traders were agitating against the vandalism carried out by the Kathmandu Metropolitan City and urged them to call them for talks and address their demands. Lawmaker Prabhu Hajra said the cholera outbreak was spreading in Birgunj and stressed the need to control it in time.

Lawmaker Shakti Bahadur Basnet argued that the government should be ready to meet the demands of the agitating farmers, arguing that the farmers have not been able to get the payment of around Rs 1.5 billion due last year. Lawmaker Prabhu Sah urged the government to address the demands of scrap traders and sugarcane farmers.

Thakur Prasad Gaire said that senior citizens and citizens availing benefits under social security have gone to the ward office for biometrics, but they are suffering due to ‘server down’. “Such disabled citizens were found to be not working even after going to the ward office for four days, they should be provided facilities by going door-to-door,” he said.

Lawmakers Kiran Kumar Sah, Surya Man Tamang (Dong) and Sher Bahadur Kunwar also expressed their views on contemporary issues, including addressing the demands of sugarcane farmers.
