Beirut. Israeli drones dropped four grenades near the U.N. peacekeeping force near the border with Israel in southern Lebanon. The Lebanese military said on Wednesday that no one was injured in the attack, when peacekeepers were involved in removing road blockades.

The U.N. peacekeeping mission, known as the UNIFIL, called Tuesday morning the attack “the most serious attack on peacekeepers and their assets” since the end of the 14-month Israeli-Hezbollah war in November. The Israeli military did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Direct threat to peacekeepers: Unifil

According to Unifil, Israeli drones dropped four grenades near the peacekeepers. These soldiers were removing barriers to ease access to the UN position in the border areas.

One grenade fell 20 meters inside and the other three about 100 meters away near UN personnel and vehicles. Since then, the drones have returned to Israel.

Unifil said the Israeli army had been informed in advance about the road clearing for peacekeepers in the southeastern part of the village of Marwahin. But after the incident, the work has been suspended due to security reasons.

Attack after UN Security Council decision

Last week, the U.N. Security Council decided to end the UNIFIL mission in southern Lebanon at the end of next year after five decades under pressure from the United States and Israel. The attack, in line with the decision, has created more sensitivity. For decades, multinational peacekeepers have monitored the security situation in southern Lebanon, including the Israeli-Hezbollah conflict.

But this mission has been criticized from both sides. In particular, officials under President Donald Trump’s administration cited this as the reason for the restructuring of its foreign policy as well as us funding cuts.

Human value of war

According to the World Bank, the Israeli-Hezbollah war killed more than 4,000 people, including hundreds of civilians, in Lebanon and caused $11 billion in damage. In Israel, 127 people, including 80 soldiers, were killed.

Violation of international law

Unifil said any acts that threaten or disrupt un peacekeeping operations on UN peacekeepers and their assets were unacceptable. Such an act is a serious violation of international law and ceasefire commitments.

Unifil also made it clear that it is the direct responsibility of the Israeli military to ensure the safety of the peacekeepers.
