Washington. President Donald Trump’s administration on Wednesday urged the U.S. Supreme Court to make a quick decision to ensure the protection of customs duties that affect global markets. The administration has already claimed that the lower court’s decision has already had a negative impact on trade negotiations.
Attorney General John Sauer told the court: “It is extremely important to quickly verify the full legal status of the president’s customs duties.” This issue needs to be resolved as quickly as possible. ’
The petition was filed after a 7-4 ruling by the US Federal Circuit. The appeals court found that Trump had misused emergency economic power to circumvent his authority while imposing sweeping customs duties.
However, judges have allowed levies to be implemented until mid-October, giving Trump time to fight the case in the Supreme Court.
After returning to the presidency, Trump imposed “reciprocal” tariffs on almost all U.S. trading partners, including a 10 percent basic rate and a higher rate for the European Union (EU), Japan and dozens of other economies.
At the same time, the US President exercised the same right to impose separate taxes on Mexico, Canada and China in view of the flow of deadly drugs into the United States. The appeals court ruled that its rights had been exceeded by using the Emergency Act.
The ruling casts doubt on trump’s deals with major trading partners such as the EU. If the Supreme Court of the Conservative Majority does not rule in Trump’s favor, the future of the billions of dollars raised by the United States looks uncertain.
In the petition, Finance Minister Scott Besant warned that the appeals court’s decision prevented the administration from taking advantage of “substantial negotiations”. The attorney general has requested oral arguments to be heard in early November.
