8,816 inmates still absconding

Kathmandu. Prisoners have escaped from 27 prisons in Nepal due to the demonstrations of Jenji on September 7 and 24. Nine inmates were also found escaping from juvenile homes.

According to Chomendra Neupane, director of the Department of Prison Management, out of the total 29,212 prisoners, 13,591 prisoners escaped from the jail. Similarly, 964 out of 1,422 escaped from the juvenile home. He said that the prisoners escaped from Jhumka, Solukhumbu, Saptari, Mahottari, Rautahat, Sindhuli, Nakkhu, Jagannath Dewal, Dilli Bazaar, Rasuwa, Chitwan, Tanahun, Kaski, Parbat, Kapilvastu, Tulsipur, Naubasta, Rukum (East), Jumla, Bajhang, Kailali, Darchula, Baitali, Dadeldhura and Kanchanupur.

Likewise, the prisoners escaped from child correction centres in Morang, Parsa, Bhaktapur, Makawanpur, Kaski, Rupandehi, Jayandu, Naubasta and Doti. According to Neupane, 5,495 prisoners who escaped from prison and 244 prisoners escaped from juvenile home have returned home so far.

A total of 8,816 inmates are still absconding and search for them is underway, the Department said. Police said the search for the inmates is underway and they are absconding.
