Bridge contract terminated after 12 years

Kathmandu. The contract agreement for the construction of a motorable bridge over the Trishuli River along the Pokhara-Narayangadh road section has been terminated.

The Road Division Office, Damauli, issued a public notice today and terminated the contract after the contractor ignored repeated directives from the contractor to complete the construction work after 12 years of the beginning of the project.TAG_OPEN_div_22

The Road Division Office has terminated the agreement with the construction company ‘Dead Sanjivani Construction Service’ for the construction of winding bridges at Abukhaireni Rural Municipality-5 of Tanahun and Bharatpur Metropolitan City-29 of Chitwan.TAG_OPEN_div_20

The office had given the last opportunity to start the work within 15 days, stating that the revised design has been approved on April 2.TAG_OPEN_div_18 However, the contract was terminated as per the provision of ‘serious violation’ mentioned in the agreement, said Rajib Shrestha, chief of the Road Division.

Locals have been agitating for a long time due to the delay in the construction of the bridge.TAG_OPEN_div_16 Siddhanta Garja Magar, coordinator of the bridge construction struggle committee, accused the construction company of playing with the sentiments of the people. The 105-metre bridge was signed in June 2013 at a cost of Rs 102.186 million, but so far only 36 percent physical progress has been made.

If the bridge is completed, it will be 25 kilometers shorter than the existing Muglin-Dumre road from Damauli.TAG_OPEN_div_14 Due to the lack of bridges, six ÷seven small buses and jeeps are compelled to ply only up to the turnaround. Passengers have to reach the Muglin-Narayangadh road section using a suspension bridge while two-wheelers are connected to the road section using the bridge.

The notice issued by the Road Division Office has directed the contractors to vacate the construction site immediately and settle the accounts within 15 days if the dues are cleared.TAG_OPEN_div_12 With the cancellation of the contract, a new tender has been called for the construction of the bridge. Division Chief Shrestha said that the process to blacklist the construction company has also been initiated.
