Kathmandu. KUWAIT (AP) — Commercial flights were suspended on Wednesday after an Iranian drone attacked Kuwait International Airport amid escalating military tensions between Iran and the United States.
Several people were injured in the incident and the airport infrastructure was severely damaged, Kuwait said. A spokesman for Kuwait’s defence ministry, Brigadier General Saud Abdulaziz al-Otaibi, said “a number of hostile drones” targeted the airport’s passenger building.
After the attack, the building was badly damaged and several people were injured. The airport, which was temporarily closed due to the war with Iran, only reopened on June 1. The attack comes amid a spate of missile and drone attacks between Iran and the United States.
On Tuesday night, the US military said it had hit Iranian military installations in retaliation for Iranian missile attacks on Kuwait and Bahrain. According to the US side, two missiles fired at Kuwait were destroyed midway and the missiles aimed at Bahrain were intercepted.
The U.S. Central Command said it had shot down several drones targeting U.S. forces in Kuwait. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) claimed to have targeted US military presence in Bahrain and other areas, but did not directly mention Kuwait.
Iran’s side said the move was in response to an alleged attack on an oil tanker amid US sanctions. The Guard said in a statement that it had warned in advance but would respond strongly in case of an attack.
Meanwhile, the US Central Command said it had retaliated against Iran’s military communications and control center near the Strait of Hormuz. Regional tensions have escalated as both sides continue to attack each other.
Iranian news agencies have claimed that talks with negotiators have been stalled, but US President Donald Trump has denied such claims that the talks are continuing. “Talks with Iran are progressing at various stages and the final outcome is still uncertain,” he said in a social media post.
According to an official involved in the regional mediation, Iran recently gave a clear indication that it would not continue talks until a ceasefire was implemented in Lebanon. However, there has been no official suspension announcement regarding the situation.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement to Congress that while he was optimistic about the nuclear side of the talks, there was no guarantee that a concrete deal would be reached.
The latest attack on Kuwait’s airport has raised concerns that military tensions in the Middle East could spiral out of control. This has put additional pressure on civil society and international flight safety.
