Tea industry in crisis due to disruption in Indian market, Freight Forwarders Association demands diplomatic initiative

Kathmandu. KATHMANDU: Nepal Freight Forwarders Association has said its serious attention has been drawn towards the complicated situation seen in the export of tea and the procedural hurdles surfaced in the Indian market.

Issuing a press release on Friday, the Association said that the production, distribution and export chain of Nepali tea industry has been affected as the Indian side has kept the tea exported from Nepal to India in its godown for long in the name of laboratory test and other technical process.TAG_OPEN_div_22

According to the association, the disruption has caused the closure of tea industries, especially in the eastern part of Nepal, affecting hundreds of tea gardens.TAG_OPEN_div_20 Stating that around 120 tea factories across the country, thousands of farmers and 50,000 to 60,000 workers are directly linked to the tea sector, the association said, adding that the halt in the activities of this sector would have negative impact on export, trade, foreign exchange earnings and overall economy.

At a time when a large chunk of Nepal’s total tea export is dependent on the Indian market, the procedural hurdles created by the Indian side have adversely affected not only the tea industrialists and exporters but also the entire Nepali economy.TAG_OPEN_div_18

KATHMANDU: Nepal Freight Forwarders Association (NFPA) has lauded the contribution of the tea sector in Nepal’s export promotion and trade facilitation, urging the government to take diplomatic initiative keeping this topic in high priority.TAG_OPEN_div_16

The association has also urged the government to take necessary initiatives to ease the trade of tea by removing the procedural and technical hurdles seen in the export of Nepali tea by holding high-level dialogue with the Indian authorities.TAG_OPEN_div_14

The association also expressed solidarity with the tea industry, exporters and all stakeholders in this difficult situation, saying they are always committed to strengthening Nepal’s export trade and supply chain.TAG_OPEN_div_12
