Nepal Rastra Bank has given the responsibility of preparing the Consumer Price Index to the National Statistics Office

. KATHMANDU: Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has handed over the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and other statistics to the National Statistics Office (NSO).

Kamal Prasad Pokharel, Chief Statistics Officer at the National Statistics Office, said that the handover process has entered the implementation phase after the study report prepared by the Joint Task Force prepared by the decision of the fifth meeting of the National Statistical Council was approved by the Council on June 22TAG_OPEN_div_24 ।

According to the office, the handover process will be initiated immediately with the objective of establishing an integrated and one-door data system by ending duplication seen in the preparation of price index.TAG_OPEN_div_22

This step has been taken as per the Statistics Act, 2079 (2079) establishing the National Statistical Office as the central body of the country’s statistical system.TAG_OPEN_div_20 Pokharel said that the responsibility of preparing the monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI), Wholesale Price Index (WI) and Wage and Wage Index (SWI) published by Nepal Rastra Bank will be handed over to the National Statistics Office in a phased manner.

Pokharel said that preparations are underway to establish a separate ‘Price Data Division’ under the National Statistics Office to systematize the transfer process.TAG_OPEN_div_18 For this, the organization and management survey is underway and necessary technical human resources and posts will be managed, he said.

Similarly, the transitional period for the upcoming fiscal year 2083-84 has been determined.TAG_OPEN_div_16 During this period, a joint team of employees and technicians of Nepal Rastra Bank and National Statistics Office will collect data, process and publish the index.

From the fiscal year TAG_OPEN_div_14 2084-85 onwards, the National Statistical Office (NSO) will be responsible for the preparation, management and regular publication of all the price indices, including the Consumer Price Index, on a single basis.
