GI law to be introduced to protect indigenous products of Nepal: Minister Yadav

. KATHMANDU: Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies Gauri Kumari Yadav and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Nepal representative Ken Simiju paid a courtesy call on the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies at the latter’s office in Singha Durbar today.

During the meeting, extensive discussions were held on branding and sustainability of indigenous products produced in different geographical areas of Nepal.TAG_OPEN_div_14 On the occasion, the international provision of geographical indications and their importance were highlighted.

During the meeting, the FO representative drew attention to the fact that although the GI system has been implemented in most of the countries of the world as well as almost all the countries of Asia, it has not yet been used in Nepal.TAG_OPEN_div_12

Stating that other countries are registering the valuable brands of Nepali indigenous products for lack of GI registration, he stressed the need to immediately formulate concrete laws to stop this and implement them.TAG_OPEN_div_10

In response, Minister Yadav said that he was committed to formulating necessary laws for the protection and promotion of Nepal’s indigenous products and initiated initiatives in this regard.TAG_OPEN_div_8 She said that the bill would be prepared soon in collaboration with the Ministry of Law, taking the issue seriously.
