Kathmandu. The total public debt of the government has reached Rs 3.75 trillion. According to the Public Debt Management Office, the total public debt of the government has reached Rs 2.973 trillion as of mid-September of the current fiscal year 2083-84.

The government’s public debt stood at Rs 2,981.70 billion at the end of July. According to this, the public debt decreased by Rs 8.64 billion in the two months. The total public debt decreased as the principal payment was more than the new borrowing, the office said.

As of August, the government has raised Rs 61.05 billion in new borrowings. During the same period, it has paid Rs 70.13 billion. Similarly, due to the change in the exchange rate, the public debt has increased by Rs 43.63 billion. The government’s internal debt has reached Rs 1361.87 billion till the end of September. The external debt has reached Rs 161.18 trillion.

The internal debt is 20.63 per cent and external debt is 24.41 per cent of the GDP. The total public debt is 45.05 per cent of GDP. The government has set a target of mobilising Rs 658.28 billion in public debt in the current financial year. As of August, Rs 61.05 billion has been borrowed. This is 9.28 per cent of the annual target.

The government has set a target of raising internal borrowing of Rs 410 crore in the current financial year. Of this, it has already raised Rs 50 billion till August, which is 12.20 per cent of the annual target.

The external borrowing target is Rs 248.28 billion. As of August, Rs 11.05 billion has been received as of external borrowing. This is 4.45 per cent of the annual target. Of the total borrowings raised by the government till August, the share of internal debt was 81.89 per cent and the share of external debt was 18.11 per cent.

The government had raised an internal borrowing of Rs 20 billion in August. In August, the amount of internal borrowing was increased to Rs 30 billion. Similarly, the amount of external borrowing was Rs 3.84 billion in July and Rs 7.21 billion was received in August.
