Farmers worried about saving paddy crop from elephants

Jhapa. Farmers in Jhapa are worried about saving their crops from wild elephants as the paddy ripening season is approaching. The Armed Police Force (APF) has stepped up security vigil in the elephant-affected areas along with a public awareness campaign urging farmers who are trying to save paddy planted in their fields to avoid the risk of elephants.
Keeping in mind the increase in the movement of people during the festival season and the risk of encountering wild elephants in the morning, evening and night, the Armed Police Force is spreading awareness through ‘miking’ in the affected settlements. Residents of areas where elephants move have been urged to take necessary precautions and not to go out of their homes except for essential work during the dark.
Superintendent of Police Sachin Karmacharya, who is also the commander of the Armed Police Force, Nepal No. 2 Battalion, Jhapa, said that public awareness activities along with security alertness have been given priority to minimize the loss of life and property by elephants.TAG_OPEN_div_24
} “Farmers and local residents who are worried about saving the paddy crop should pay equal attention to the risk of elephants. If you see an elephant, you should go to a safe place without trying to get closer, tease or chase you away,” Karmacharya said.
TAG_OPEN_div_20 According to him, mobile phones and foot patrols of the Armed Police Force are being deployed in the elephant-affected areas. Work is also being done to make the local people aware of the movement of elephants and coordinate with the concerned agencies and locals to reduce the possible risks.
The Armed Police Force has urged farmers to take special precautions as there may be risks in going to the fields, monitoring the crops at night and trying to chase away the elephants as the time for paddy harvesting is approaching. It has also been requested not to carry out such activities as blocking the path of elephants, taking photos or videos nearby and gathering crowds can increase the risk of elephants.TAG_OPEN_div_18
Similarly, it has been urged not to keep food that can attract elephants around houses, cowsheds and courtyards, to arrange adequate light around the house and to keep the thick bushes clean. The APF has also requested to take special care of children, elderly people and other vulnerable people living in the settlements.
In Jhapa, the movement of wild elephants has been seen in Bahudangi of Mechinagar, the upper area of Buddha Shanti, Jalthal of Haldibari, the Chure area of Arjundhara and some areas of Damak and Shivasatakshi. The Armed Police Force has urged the residents of the elephant-affected areas to be vigilant and not to come near the elephant if it is spotted.
