Iran hints at talks with U.S.

Kathmandu. Iran’s Massoud Pezeskian has given a clear signal that he wants to engage in “fair and just negotiations” with the United States.

He said that he has instructed the Foreign Minister to take initiatives in this regard. The first direct message from Tehran comes at a time when tensions with Washington have escalated since last month’s crackdown on nationwide protests.

The announcement is seen as a turning point for reformist President Pejeskian. He has warned in recent weeks that instability in the country is spiraling beyond his control, and now appears to be trying to open a diplomatic route. Analysts say this will also signal that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has agreed to talks.

Turkey is said to be trying behind the scenes for regional mediation. U.S. Middle East envoy Steve Wittoff is on a visit to the region. But it is uncertain whether the talks will succeed, as President Donald Trump has made Iran’s nuclear program a key condition of the talks.

President Pejeskian said the decision was taken at the request of friendly governments in the region, writing in English and Persian on social media. He said the talks should be based on dignity, prudence and impartiality, without threats and unreasonable expectations.

The United States has not formally acknowledged the start of the talks. But speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Monday, Trump said that talks with Iran are ongoing and it would be great if a deal can be reached. He warned of serious consequences if a solution was not found.
