Why is Trump so dissatisfied with NATO?

Kathmandu. U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed his dissatisfaction with the alliance for not getting the expected support from NATO for its war with Iran. He said he was disappointed by the current behavior, claiming that the US has carried a heavy economic and security burden for years.

According to Trump, the US is spending trillions of dollars to protect Europe, especially from the threat of Russia. But he complained that NATO member countries have not supported him in this hour of crisis. “We spent a lot of money for NATO, but they weren’t there for us,” he said. He said there was no point in trying to show help now that the danger had subsided.

According to international media, Trump’s dissatisfaction with NATO is not new. Even before he became president, he had been questioning the coalition structure and the imbalance of spending among member states. He believes that European countries have not invested enough in the defense sector. His views are also reflected in controversial statements such as the proposal to add Greenland to the United States.

Trump described NATO’s current role as a “stain that will never be erased” and called the alliance a “paper tiger”. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has described the current conflict as a “test of trans-Atlantic relations”.

However, analysts say that Trump will not be able to pull the US out of NATO just if he wants to. That would require a two-thirds majority in the US Senate or a formal legal decision by Congress. At the same time, such a move seems unlikely, given that there is still widespread support for NATO in both major parties of US politics.

Still, Trump does have some strategic options. Although Article 5 of the NATO treaty ensures collective security, there is no automatic requirement for each member to intervene militarily. In such a situation, the United States is likely to limit its aid. At the same time, the option of withdrawing about 84,000 US troops stationed across Europe is also open.

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, the Trump administration is also considering moving US military bases from countries considered uncomfortable during the war with Iran. This is a sign of further tension in trans-Atlantic relations.
